I honestly don’t understand the outrage here. It seems that Patreon just made the fees that they were already charging more obvious, and drew ire because of that.
As the article explains, they used to charge 5% of all donations, plus the transaction costs. So the patreon donors were already covering the transaction costs, it was just invisible to them. Now, they’ve reduced the rate to 2.9%. This is a huge drop, considering that the original rate was closer to 5.3% (5% / 0.95%-transaction costs).
I don’t know how much of the $.35 will be Patreon’s profits, but I don’t think that they are making significantly more money because of that.
